A Little Introduction

So a question I've been getting is: "I thought you already went to Spain?"
Yes, in 2010 I was in Portugal and we spent a weekend in Seville. This trusty map shows Seville on the southern tip of Spain, and Barcelona far far away to the northeast, along the coast. Should be a completely different adventure.

Barcelona by the numbers:

2 official languages: Catalan and Spanish
6 hours ahead of Pittsburgh time
39 feet above sea level - average elevation
3,500 pedestrians walk Portal de l'Angel every hour, the most walked street in Spain
100,000 spectators can sit in the Football Club Barcelona Stadium, largest stadium in the world
6,100,000+ residents, including city and urban limits

Barcelona facts:

  • The origin of the city is still disputed. Some say it was founded by Hercules, 400 years before Rome. Others say that Hamilcar Barca, a famous Carthaginian General and father of Hannibal, was the founder in the 3rd century.
  • There was no beach until 1992 when the city hosted the Olympic Games and revamped the coastline.
  • Car accidents occur every 19 seconds, making it one of the most dangerous cities to drive in.
  • Barcelona is the center of Modernist architecture, particularly known for masterpieces by Antoni Gaudi. One cathedral, La Sagrada Familia, began construction in 1882, and is still unfinished
  • The Gothic center of the the old city, includes buildings dating from medieval times and as far back as the Roman settlements.
  • Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, which recognizes three national animals (two happen to be mythical): Catalan donkey, Phoenix, and Wyvern
