I've tried to give myself a decent overview of life in Spain, where to go in Barcelona, what to do, what to expect. This goes for food as well. A successful trip out of the country isn't complete without experiencing mealtime, their way.
Jenn tells me Spaniards are big on seafood - they had no choice really, being on a peninsula and all. Barcelona is especially influenced, sitting right next to the Mediterranean Sea. Well, I've come to terms with some seafood, but inside I'm freaking out because I'm imaging myself with a bowl of crustaceans three times a day. (Also a flashback to the paella in Seville, with the numerous little creatures cooked in.) To ease my appetite anxiety I promptly Googled my upcoming menu.
Perhaps the best thing is that it is typical to eat at least 5 times throughout the day. Count me in! A light breakfast, some tapas during the morning, lunch around 2pm - this is the big meal, afternoon snack around 5pm, then dinner at 9pm. And a churro if you're still out later than that. OH the CHURROS!
And while fish and other seafood are a big part, other staples include bread, rice, potatoes, beans, eggs, chicken, ham & sausage, lamb, and rabbit. And Spanish wine. And silly me, how could I forget flan and Spanish chocolate?! All is well.
That being said, here is a little list of the sea dwellers I can expect to encounter at the table:
- lobster, langostine, and large shrimp
- crabs, snow crabs, and blue crabs
- octopus and squid
- oysters
- clams, razor clams, heart clams, and mussels
- goose barnacles (pictured below)
